Since childhood, American singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo has been climbing her way to stardom. First known for Disney Channel’s successful Bizaardvark as well as High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, Rodrigo got her start in acting with the occasional song. Her debut self-written single, “Driver’s License” was released when she was 17. It debuted #1 on the Hot 100, making her the first artist to have their debut single debut at #1 since Carrie Underwood. It later received Best Pop Solo Performance at the 2022 GRAMMYs. She then released an album, SOUR (2021), following up with GUTS (2023). Both albums were very successful and had a world tour. GUTS had a deluxe version: GUTS (spilled).

After three years, Olivia Rodrigo concluded her GUTS tour and announced her third album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, would drop June 12. The album surprised many with its rebranding, as both albums 1 and 2 were four, all-capital letters, with purple backgrounds in their cover art, but her third has neither. In the cover art of you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, Rodrigo is seen in a vintage-looking pink dress, white ankle socks, and black heels, nearly flipping over on a playground swing with a jovial smile. The background is mixed of the gray-blue and swirled-white of the sky. She hasn’t put out the tracklist, but we know the album will feature a total of 13 songs, including “drop dead” her single coming out on April 17, which she announced April 7.

Most information about the themes of the album have come from an article by British Vogue. “It’s full of sad love songs,” Rodrgio said. “It was a creative challenge to write from a joyful place,” she says. “When you’re experiencing that you’re connected to someone, or feeling really good, you’re not in your head thinking about bittersweet poems!” She also noted that the fashion for it was “effortless, feminine, with a slightly undone feel”.
The British Vogue reporter, Amel Mukhtar, went on to say the first song “is smooth, trippy soft rock about the spirituality of finding the man of your dreams” and that her voice “sounds so different – laid-back and mature.”
While we might not know much Olivia Rodrigo’s third album, it’s sure to be a success.
