“How do I keep my grades up?” Today’s question was asked by an anonymous sender, and easily applies to any student. I’m here to give some tips! As a straight-A student, I can tell you that people are telling you the truth when they say effort is key. Do you think I’m good at math? No. But through focus and assistance, I’m decent at it and able to get a good grade. No matter what subject[s] you struggle with, there are strategies that will help with all of them. And remember, sometimes it’s okay to get a B or C if you’re doing your best.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed about this situation, read the boldened words first to get a basic idea and not overthink it.
- Complete your assignments. Even if you aren’t good at what the assignment covers, or the due date has already passed, a partial grade is better than a 0. Most teachers will give full credit within the week of the assignment. Even if you’re tempted to give up, this is what will help you the most in the long-term.
- Ask for help. I understand that some teachers will be annoyed, or maybe your parents are strict, or maybe your friends struggle just as much as you do, but the chances are that there is someone in your life to help you. A lot of teachers would want you to come to them if you don’t understand something! Have you ever asked your friends if they’re good at the subject you’re struggling with? If they are, don’t make them do the work for you, even if they’re willing to, because then, during a test [which will make up 70% of your grade] you won’t understand anything.
- One step at a time. Thinking, oh no I have this social studies paper due and that English essay soon and I have to study for that math test and-, will not help you. Try and only think about one assignment at a time. If you struggle staying organized, consider keeping a planner.
- Don’t be hard on yourself. I, personally, find myself doing this a lot. When I get a B, I get really annoyed and am like, what the heck? How did this happen? But it’s not a big deal, as long as you’re doing your best. If you find yourself not caring about your schoolwork, think of your future, and your overall well-being.
- Have faith in Time! Sometimes, you have a low grade near the beginning of the quarter, and if you just wait until the end of it, meanwhile doing your best, it will improve.
- Are you struggling with something that’s bringing down your grades? If you’re sick or struggling with your mental health, visit the nurse or counseling, or take a few days off. Talk to trusted adults. Prioritize yourself over a grade, and you will probably do better in school.
Essentially, you should do your best by staying organized, completing assignments, and studying what you struggle with. Accept your grade for what it is, and seek help if you need it. Be patient, over time grades can improve.
Good luck,
-Margot
