This year, the FIFA World Cup is being held in North America. The games are spread across host cities throughout North America, while Kansas City serves as both a match host city and a base camp location for four teams.
Kansas City has been selected to host four national teams as “Base Camps,” serving as a home away from home for these athletes. The four teams are England, Argentina, the Netherlands, and Algeria.
At these base camps, teams have access to training facilities, medical services, dining and recovery areas, accommodations, and a wide range of other support services to make them feel at home.
Kansas City will also host six World Cup matches at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
Many people are worried about all the tourists because they feel Kansas City is not fit for a large population. Kansas City is working on numerous projects in preparation for the influx of tourists coming into town for the games. For example, Arrowhead is getting major renovations to meet FIFA standards, the streetcar line is expanding to connect more of the city, and people are even creating “Fan Zones”, where there will be big watch parties downtown.
This is just the beginning of the uprising of Kansas City. People are using the World Cup as a chance to upgrade the city long-term, not just for the games. Transportation, tourism, community impact, and a great number of other factors are being improved in Kansas City. This is a great opportunity for the city to expand not only physically, but also as a community.
