OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, may have just saved us from the AI slop. Just six months after its release, Sora AI was shut down last week. If you don’t know, Sora is OpenAI’s video generation model that turns your video prompt into a short 10- to 15-second video. And now it’s gone, leaving a surprisingly small audience behind.
According to studies, at its peak, Sora AI reached about 1 million users, but then crashed back to half that. The program was formatted like a social media site with a for you page and people you could follow. The problem was, it was wicked expensive to maintain. At one point, OpenAI was spending upwards of a million dollars a day. That’s over $30 million a month!
The reason why was the available resources because when you AI generate something, it’s not your device that’s doing the work. Every prompt, question, and idea you ask AI gets sent to a giant data center full of massive computers that spans a stadium-sized room. Of course, when running a computer resource of that size, things get pricey and less practical.
AI barely makes any money, and with content creators using resources to make AI generated content like the series, AI fruit love island, the economic model isn’t sustainable. Now that Sora isn’t a priority, OpenAI can put more resources into their other AI models like ChatGPT, so it can learn and become smarter.
In sports terms, Sora was like a bad player on a maxed-out contract. So getting rid of that player leaves OpenAI with all the money they could have spent on it, and an open spot on the roster.
For now, no more slop. But that doesn’t mean that it’ll last forever.

whenever i search something up i always have to put like reddit or something after it because if im getting misinformered i wanna get misinformed by the people
this is reakky good
