Yesterday morning at 9 a.m. PCT (11:00 a.m. Central), global girl group KATSEYE released their new single Pinky Up across all platforms. The track dabbles in techno beats and layered computer vocals, and has a music video to go along. Similar to all of their other singles, the chorus has a dance specific to the song, with synchronized moves of the members’ pinky fingers and arms to create a pattern to the drum beat.
Their media team had been teasing a comeback for around a month, but many paid very little attention because of member Manon Bannerman’s ongoing hiatus. Manon shared back in February that she would be taking a break from participating in the group’s scheduled performances to focus on her mental health. Fans were not happy with the label, since HYBE, where the group is signed, appeared to have been leaving Manon out of many group dances and social media videos before her hiatus.
The girls gave intel about the concept on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on February 5th by telling each other, “Pinkies up!” and leaked clips of the group’s dance practice somehow found their way onto social media.
The concept is a nod to 18th and 19th-century etiquette, since drinking tea was a representation of good manners. While putting your pinky up wasn’t an official rule, it was a great way to represent the idea of good manners and proper behavior.
