If you’re in Mrs. Culp’s 7th grade social studies class, you probably know that she played basketball up through college. Many students are interested in her awesome career.
In high school, she played for the Campbell County Camels in Gillette, Wyoming, one of the only high schools in America with their mascot being a camel. Mrs. Culp won two State Championships in high school, too. During that time, she was also the Regional Gatorade and All American Player of the Year.
However, Mrs. Culp faced her own challenges in her Freshman and Sophomore year of college at University of Nebraska. She hardly ever got any playing time, it was very hard for her. Luckily, she improved drastically and she worked into the starting lineup for her Junior and Senior year. She then averaged 6 points per game, and had a very high free throw percentage.
After her senior year, she went to England and Sweden with the big 12 all star team.
What made her want to start playing basketball? “I saw the first women’s basketball game on T.V. and one of the announcers said that all 15 girls on the team had full ride scholarships. I thought, I am going to be 6 feet tall. I am going to get a full ride scholarship,” said Culp.
After that, Mrs. Culp shot 500 baskets a day for practice. She also played pick up basketball because there were no premier teams in her small town.
Student, Will, is very proud of the accomplishments of his great social studies teacher. “I feel like everyday I go to school, I am like, dude, my teacher is a basketball player!” shared Will. Will and his friends like to search up Cori McDill (her maiden name) and discover her exciting past. The boys also ask her about other players on the team.
