Goodson is holding a wooden disk with “Our First Pandemic” written on it.
After COVID hit and students were forced into online learning, teachers had to remain in school buildings and teach from their empty classrooms. Many were sad, and spirits were low, so teachers like Mr. Goodson took the initiative to create a more positive environment for his colleagues.
Since he is a woodshop teacher, he had the idea to create wooden disks with fun, positive messages written on them, like “Our First Pandemic.” Goodson hid them around the school to create a mini scavenger hunt for teachers. He would also scooter around the empty hallways in between classes, in an attempt to make his colleagues laugh.
After 33 years, Mr. Goodson will be retiring from teaching. He spent 14 of those at Indian Hills Middle School, being loved by all his students.
After teaching for so long, he says that the thing he enjoys the most is seeing his students grasp the concepts being taught to them. He loves seeing them apply their knowledge afterwards and doing the projects.
Goodson has learned a lot throughout his career; however, he says that he learns just as much from the kids as he teaches them.
Throughout his career, Goodson has achieved many things to be proud of; his favorite is the 3-day activities, which he founded. Students come in for 3 days and work around plumbing, electrical work, and woodworking. He runs the event and enjoys seeing students work around jobs like those.
With all of his classes, he teaches his students how to make pinewood derby cars and hold a race with them. However, during COVID, Goodson would have them drop the cars off and record the races, making sure that they still had the experience despite lockdown.
During his retirement, Goodson is looking forward to spending more time with his granddaughter and having quality time for himself. He is also excited to attend more volleyball games as a line judge. Mr. Goodson has done so much for our school community, helping in any way he can.
