When you received your 2025-2026 class schedule in Skyward, did you notice your elective classes? Did any of them happen to relate to the arts? Think about it: What’s the best part of your day? Is it lunch? Math class? PE? Or, when you ponder it, is it your art classes? While some people may not realize it, almost all of the electives that IHMS has to offer are related to the arts. But not all art classes take place in the art room, per se. IHMS’s art classes include Band, Orchestra, Art classes, Performance, and Foods/FACs. After all, the Oxford Languages Dictionary defines art as “the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.”
7th grader Juliana Robertson notes that “The arts are special to me because they give me a break from the stress of the real world, [and] you can be anyone you want to be.” She adds, “Using music, you can express countless emotions!”
Of course, some students take art classes simply to be in class with their friends, and that’s ok!
From a recent poll, about 60% of respondents stated that they don’t think they would have as much fun at school if there were no art classes. Student Ash Rollheiser says that his “entire day revolves around getting to go to performance,” and that he “thinks [art] tells things that words can’t and I think the best art is art that you can’t describe with words.”
Rethink just why you chose classes in the Arts!
